프롤로그 미리보기

When I first received my enlistment notice, I thought it would be a standard military service.

A common rite of passage for every healthy young man in South Korea.

But the unit name on my notice was somehow... strange.

'The 9th Special Mobile Company.'

A phantom name that didn't appear anywhere, no matter how much I searched online.

I assumed it was just an administrative error or one of many obscure subordinate units.

That naive assumption shattered the moment I boarded the bus to the training center.

The bus wasn't heading to Nonsan, but deep into the rugged mountains of Gangwon Province—a place not even on the map.

Outside the window, heavy rain poured down, and not a single streetlamp was in sight.

Every flash of lightning cast grotesque shadows from the skeletal trees.

I was the only one on the rattling bus.

A thick wire mesh separated the driver's seat from the passenger area.

The atmosphere was suffocating, as if I were a prisoner being transported.

I tried to ask the driver about our destination, but he only glared at me through the rearview mirror.
